Having a “gap” in your resume (months or years where you weren’t officially employed) used to be a major red flag. Today, recruiters understand that life happens: layoffs, traveling, parenting, or full-time studies.

Here is how to handle employment gaps on your CV:

1. Tweak your date formatting If your employment gap was less than a year, omit the months in your experience section. Writing “2022 - 2024” instead of “February 2022 - March 2024” honestly conceals short periods of inactivity.

2. Be honest but strategic If you were out for a year for health or family reasons, you can add a brief entry in your experience saying: “Sabbatical for family care.” Recruiters value transparency and emotional intelligence.

3. Highlight what you did during that time If during your break you volunteered, took online courses, freelanced, or built personal projects, add it! You can list it just like a job: “Period of Professional Development (2023): Achieved Data Analytics certification and built a personal coding portfolio.”

Gaps don’t disqualify you; appearing like you are trying to hide information does.
