We all love a beautifully designed, creative resume. But when you apply to mid or large-sized companies through online portals, an overly complex design can be your worst enemy.

Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) are parsing robots programmed to read plain text from top to bottom and from left to right.

Design elements that “break” ATS bots:

  • Multiple columns: The bot might read the first line of the left column and jump straight across to the right column, mixing your job title with your language skills into a gibberish sentence.
  • Charts or skill bars: Putting “70% skill in Photoshop” using a visual progress bar means the ATS will likely read “0” because it cannot process images or graphics.
  • Photos or icons: Unless you are in specific European or Asian markets, photos simply confuse text parsers and can cause formatting errors.

The “Bulletproof” ATS Format: To guarantee an ATS reads your CV flawlessly, stick to a single-column Reverse-Chronological layout. Use standard, readable fonts like Arial, Calibri, Verdana, or Inter. Separate your sections clearly with bold, uppercase headers (EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION) and use simple, standard bullet points for your lists.

All templates provided by cvatsfacil.com are hard-coded from the ground up to respect these strict parsing rules.
